How Good Posture Benefits Kids, and How PT Can Help

We all want our kids to grow up strong and confident, but did you know that something as simple as good posture can make a big difference? Proper posture supports everything from healthy growth and motor skills to better focus and mood. If you've noticed your child slouching or leaning to one side, they might need a little help to get back on track.

My name is Kenzie, and I'm one of the pediatric physical therapists here at Metro Therapy in Fridley, MN. Today, we're going to talk about posture. Let’s explore why good posture is so important and how physical therapy can help your child stand tall and feel their best.

What Is Good Posture, and Why Is It Important?

Posture is how a person holds their body up against gravity, both when sitting and standing. Good posture alignment is important for kids, especially in order to:

  • Promote symmetrical growth and mobility

  • Promote gross motor skill progression

  • Increase muscle development

  • Improve flexibility

  • Improve overall mood

  • Increase ability to focus and participate

Good posture is also important to reduce the risk of future orthopedic concerns and pain.

Signs Your Child Needs Physical Therapy for Their Posture

If you notice your child is constantly slumped forward, or you notice that they're always leaning more to one side, that would be considered poor posture. Your child may lack the body awareness, strength, endurance, or balance to maintain good posture. Fortunately, poor posture can be treated in physical therapy.

Physical therapy can provide stretches and exercises to help improve your child's overall posture in order to reduce the likelihood of pain while improving academic and recreational performances. So, if you think your child has poor posture, feel free to give us a call to schedule a physical therapy evaluation at (763) 343-6751.
